French Junior Open

(February 17, 2008)
This was my first European tournament of 2008. This is the second time I have been to this tournament and since then they have made many changes to the Set Squash Club in Marseilles; new courts, gym and a dance studio. These changes have made the whole venue much more luxurious.

The first match I played was against a French boy who really did not stretch me so I won that comfortably, 3/0.

After that match I played against an older more experienced Czech boy. Unfortunately he played very well on the day and I played the wrong tactics against him. So lost that match 3/0.

By the third match I was feeling very tired all over my body. The first game I played I lost because my legs were feeling very heavy and I was not moving as well as I could. I knew I had to get them moving for them to feel better, so I stepped up the pace, started taking the ball earlier and volleying more and won that game. After the second I stopped volleying as much which meant he pinned me to the back and made me do all of the running. After losing the third game I knew I had to win the next game. After a good talk with my Coach I knew I would have to push it in the next game, so fought through until I won it. After winning the fourth game my game plan was working which gave me more confidence so I stepped up another gear by attacking aggressively which put him under immediate pressure resulting in me winning the match 3/2.

After a hard first day, I played a 9/16 seeded Spanish boy in the early afternoon. I had beaten him previously and today was no exception; I won 3/0

In the evening I played the Welsh number 1. This was one of my better performances as I had lost easily in our previous meetings. Although the score does not truly reflect the game I was pleased with my performance overall, as I made him work very hard for his points.

The last day of the tournament I was in a play-off for a position. I had lost 3/0 to this boy previously in Switzerland, so I was determined to put in a solid and positive performance. After me being well in control throughout the game I got my revenge 3/0.

My coach said it was a very positive weekend and I should continue to build on it, and personalIy I was very satisfied with my results.
